Prem Mandir Vrindavan, a popular stop on a Delhi to Mathura road trip

Mathura is about 180 km from central Delhi, and Vrindavan about 12–15 km further. By car it's a 3–3.5 hour drive in normal traffic — the most popular way to visit, because you can go temple to temple without waiting for transport.

Here's how to choose your route, when to leave, and what to expect on the way.

Route 1 vs Route 2: Yamuna Expressway or NH-19?

Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic and stops.

For most people the Yamuna Expressway is quicker and more comfortable. Your driver will choose based on your pickup point and live traffic.

When to leave Delhi

  • Same-day trip: leave by 5:30–6:00 AM so you reach Mathura by about 8:30–9 AM and Vrindavan before the temples close at midday.
  • 2-day trip: a 7–8 AM start is fine; you'll still make the evening darshan on Day 1.
  • Return: leaving Vrindavan after 8 PM usually means lighter traffic back into Delhi.

Breaks and stops on the way

  • There are food courts and fuel stations along the Yamuna Expressway — good for a breakfast and washroom break.
  • On NH-19 there are many dhabas and highway restaurants around Palwal and Kosi Kalan.
  • Carry water and a light snack for the temple lanes; food inside Vrindavan is pure vegetarian.

Parking and getting around in Vrindavan

The lanes around Banke Bihari, Radha Raman and Nidhivan are too narrow for cars. Your driver will drop you at the nearest point on the main road and wait at a parking area. E-rickshaws are easy to find for short hops between temples.

Other ways to travel from Delhi

  • Train: frequent trains from New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin reach Mathura Junction in about 1.5–2.5 hours. You'll still need local transport between temples.
  • Bus: UP Roadways and private buses run to Mathura; slower and less flexible.
  • Self-drive: possible, but temple-area parking and narrow lanes can be stressful on busy days.
