The short answer: October to March is the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan for comfortable weather. But Braj is a festival land — Holi in March and Janmashtami in August or September are unforgettable, if you're ready for crowds.

Here's what each part of the year is like.

Quick answer: which month is best?

You want…Go in…
Pleasant weather and calm darshanOctober–November, February
The most famous festivalMarch (Holi week)
Krishna's birthday celebrationsAugust/September (Janmashtami)
Fewer crowds, lower demandJuly–August (avoiding festival days), but expect rain and heat
AvoidMay–June afternoons (often above 40°C)

October to March: the best season

  • October–November: warm days, cool evenings. Kartik month (around Oct–Nov) is especially sacred in Vrindavan, with deep daan (lamp offerings) at the Yamuna and temples. Sharad Purnima and Govardhan Puja (the day after Diwali) also fall around this time.
  • December–January: cold mornings and fog; days are pleasant. Carry warm clothes for early darshan. Fog can slow morning drives on the expressway.
  • February: one of the nicest months — mild weather before the Holi rush.
  • March: Holi week in Braj — colourful and joyful, but very crowded. See our Holi 2027 guide.

April to June: hot summer

Temperatures often cross 40°C in May and June. If you must travel in summer, see temples early in the morning and after sunset, rest in the afternoon, and drink plenty of water. Temples follow their summer timings — see Banke Bihari timings.

July to September: monsoon and Janmashtami

  • Sawan (July–August): greenery returns; the Jhulan (swing) festival is celebrated in many Vrindavan temples, and on Hariyali Teej Banke Bihari is seated on a golden swing.
  • Janmashtami (August/September): Krishna's birthday — midnight celebrations at Krishna Janmabhoomi and all over Vrindavan. Huge crowds; plan transport and stay well in advance.
  • Radhashtami: about two weeks after Janmashtami, celebrated grandly at the Radha Rani Temple in Barsana.

Rain can make lanes muddy and slow the Govardhan parikrama, but darshan continues as normal.

When are the crowds lightest?

  • Weekdays (Tuesday–Thursday) are calmer than weekends.
  • Mornings soon after temples open are calmer than evenings.
  • Avoid Ekadashi, Purnima, long weekends and school holidays if you want a quick darshan.
