Holi in Braj isn't one day — it's a week-long festival that moves from Barsana to Nandgaon, Vrindavan, Gokul, Mathura and Baldeo. It's one of the most joyful (and most crowded) times to visit.

Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon
The most famous Braj Holi. Men from Nandgaon (Krishna's village) come to Barsana (Radha's village) and the women playfully 'beat' them with lathis while the men shield themselves. The next day, the roles are reversed in Nandgaon.
- Reach Barsana by around 9 AM — roads close and crowds build quickly.
- Watch from a rooftop or a safe corner; the lanes get packed.
- Wear old clothes and closed shoes; protect your phone in a waterproof pouch.
Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari
On Rangbharni Ekadashi, flower petals are showered on devotees at Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. It's short and extremely crowded. Families with children or seniors may prefer to watch the coloured Holi celebrations in other temples instead.
Safety first
Keep children close, avoid the densest parts of the crowd, agree on a meeting point, and follow police and temple volunteer instructions.
A 4-day Braj Holi plan
- Day 1: Arrive, check in (Vrindavan or Mathura), evening darshan.
- Day 2: Lathmar Holi in Barsana; evening back to your hotel.
- Day 3: Lathmar Holi in Nandgaon or a calmer temple day in Vrindavan.
- Day 4: Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari, or Gokul's Chhadi Maar Holi, then depart.

Booking hotels and transport
- Book hotels and cabs 2–3 months ahead — Holi week is the busiest time of the year in Braj.
- Stay in Vrindavan or Mathura; both are central for daily trips to Barsana and Nandgaon.
- Private cars are stopped outside the main festival zones; expect to walk the last part.
- Holi events are free to watch. Ignore anyone selling 'VIP passes'.
What to wear and carry
- Old white cotton clothes and closed shoes.
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from colour.
- Coconut oil on skin and hair before you go out — colour washes off more easily.
- Waterproof pouch for phone and cash; carry ID.
- Water bottle and a change of clothes in the car.
