Prem Mandir, one of the best places to visit in Vrindavan

Vrindavan has thousands of temples — locals say there's one in every home. If it's your first visit, these 15 places give you the heart of Vrindavan: the old temples of the Goswamis, the sacred groves, the Yamuna ghats, and the grand modern temples.

At the end you'll find a simple route that groups them so you don't zig-zag across town.

Old town temples (walk between them)

1. Shri Banke Bihari Temple

Vrindavan's most visited temple, dedicated to Bihari Ji, the deity revealed by Swami Haridas. Darshan happens in short glimpses as the curtain opens and closes. Check Banke Bihari timings before you go.

2. Radha Raman Temple

One of the seven main Goswami temples, established by Gopal Bhatta Goswami. The deity is believed to have self-manifested from a shaligram stone. Calm and deeply traditional.

3. Radha Vallabh Temple

The principal temple of the Radha Vallabh tradition founded by Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu — the tradition followed by Premanand Ji Maharaj.

4. Nidhivan

A sacred grove of twisted tulsi trees. Devotees believe Radha and Krishna perform the Raas Leela here at night, so it's closed after the evening aarti and no one stays inside.

5. Seva Kunj

Another sacred grove, linked to Krishna's loving service to Radha. Close to Nidhivan and similar in atmosphere.

6. Shahji Temple

Known for its spiral 'tedhe khambe' (twisted) marble pillars and fine Italian-style architecture. A short walk from Banke Bihari.

7. Radha Damodar Temple

A Goswami-era temple where Srila Prabhupada, founder of ISKCON, lived before travelling to the West. His rooms are preserved here.

8. Madan Mohan Temple

One of the oldest temples in Vrindavan, on a small hill near the Yamuna, connected with Sanatana Goswami. The tall red sandstone shikhara is a landmark.

9. Govind Dev Ji Temple

A huge red sandstone temple built in 1590 under Raja Man Singh of Amber. The original deity was later moved to Jaipur for safety, but the building itself is magnificent.

10. Keshi Ghat

The most beautiful ghat in Vrindavan, where Krishna is said to have defeated the demon Keshi. Come at sunset for the Yamuna aarti and a boat ride.

11. Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple

A Shiva temple with a lovely story: Shiva took the form of a gopi to join the Raas Leela. In the evening the Shiva lingam is dressed like a gopi.

12. ISKCON Vrindavan (Krishna Balaram Mandir)

Built by ISKCON in 1975 in Raman Reti, with deities of Krishna-Balaram, Radha-Shyamasundar and Gaura-Nitai. Known for continuous kirtan and well-organised darshan.

13. Prem Mandir

A white Italian-marble temple by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, opened in 2012, with gardens and sculptures of Krishna's pastimes. It's lit up in changing colours after sunset — evening is the best time.

14. Rangji Temple (Ranganatha)

A large temple built in the South Indian (Dravidian) style, with a tall gopuram and a gold-plated pillar. Feels very different from the rest of Vrindavan — a favourite of visitors from the South.

15. Katyayani Peeth

Revered as a Shakti Peeth. The gopis are said to have worshipped Goddess Katyayani here, praying for Krishna as their husband.

  • Photography is not allowed inside many temples.
  • Use e-rickshaws in the old town; cars can't enter most lanes.
  • Weekday mornings are the calmest; weekends and festivals are very crowded.
