Braj 84 Kos Yatra: Route, Places, Duration & How to Do It by Car
What the 84 Kos Parikrama is, the main places on the route, how long it takes on foot vs by car, and how to plan it for elderly family members.

The Braj 84 Kos Yatra is a pilgrimage around the whole land of Braj — the places where Krishna was born, grew up, played and performed his leelas. A 'kos' is an old unit of distance of roughly 3 km, so the route is commonly described as about 250–270 km.
Traditionally it's walked over several weeks. Today many families do a shorter version by car over a few days. Here's how both work.

What is the 84 Kos Yatra?
Braj Mandal spreads across Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan (around Deeg and Kaman) and Haryana. The yatra visits the 12 forests (vans), sacred kunds, hills and villages connected with Krishna and Radha.
It's believed that completing the 84 Kos Parikrama brings great spiritual merit. Many groups walk it in the holy months, especially Bhadrapad (August–September) and during Chaturmas.
Main places on the route
| Area | Key places |
|---|---|
| Mathura | Krishna Janmabhoomi, Vishram Ghat, Madhuvan, Talvan, Kumudvan |
| Govardhan | Daan Ghati, Mansi Ganga, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund |
| Rajasthan side | Deeg, Kamyavan (Kaman) |
| Barsana & Nandgaon | Radha Rani Temple, Prem Sarovar, Nand Bhavan, Kokilavan |
| Across the Yamuna | Bhandirvan, Mant, Mahavan, Gokul, Raval, Baldeo (Dauji) |

The traditional walking yatra
- Usually takes about 30–40 days on foot, often with an organised group (sant mandali) that arranges camps and food.
- Pilgrims walk barefoot or in simple footwear, eat sattvic food and follow daily rules of the group.
- The busiest season is Bhadrapad and Chaturmas; weather can be hot and humid.
Before you commit
The walking yatra is physically demanding. Consult a doctor, join an experienced group, and do some long practice walks before you start.
84 Kos Yatra by car (3–5 days)
A car-based yatra covers the main places of the 84 Kos route in 3 to 5 days, with hotel stays in Vrindavan or Mathura. It's the practical choice for senior citizens and working families.
- Day 1: Mathura — Janmabhoomi, Vishram Ghat, Madhuvan and nearby vans.
- Day 2: Govardhan, Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar, Deeg and Kamyavan.
- Day 3: Barsana, Nandgaon, Kokilavan and Prem Sarovar.
- Day 4: Across the Yamuna — Gokul, Mahavan, Raval, Baldeo; return via Bhandirvan/Mant if time allows.
- Day 5: Vrindavan temples and Keshi Ghat; departure.

- Visit the busiest temples on weekday mornings.
- Use e-rickshaws for narrow village lanes in Barsana, Nandgaon and Gokul.
- Carry medicines, water and light snacks — some village stretches have few shops.

Best time for the 84 Kos Yatra
Walking groups traditionally go in Bhadrapad (August–September). For a car-based yatra, October to March is the most comfortable. Avoid May–June heat and festival days if you want a calm journey. More in our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide.
